Trip: Cancun Mexico, October 23, 2023- November 1, 2023
First let me start off by saying Cancun is a BEAUTIFUL place full of super friendly people. When I started planning my honeymoon, I didn’t even consider Cancun because of everything I had heard about it. I heard It was high crime, everyone that went there was rubbered, kidnapped or killed. This made me feel very uncomfortable and I wanted this vacation to be relaxing and safe, so I overlooked Cancun completely in the beginning of my honeymoon searching. Now let me tell you, if you are planning a wedding and planning a honeymoon it gets stressful. I looked for months on and off for honeymoon vacations and didn’t find anything that just wowed me.
My now husband loves looking for vacation and vacation deals, so I handed the planning to him. His first find was Greece, and I loved that idea, but Greece isn’t tropical in October when we went, and we wanted tropical. He was then brought up Cancun. We talked about my worries, and we did A LOT of research, on tik tok, google, Facebook, booking.com, Expedia, trip advisor and so many more. Honestly, all the research really did ease my mind. From there I started looking for hotels.
The first hotel I found and booked had great ratings/reviews, 3 weeks before the wedding the rating shot down and I saw awful things about this hotel. People were getting robbed, they found racoons in their rooms, they couldn’t use the elevators because of the animals and their staff was very unfriendly. We then found the most beautiful and perfect resort. HYATT ZILARA CANCUN. Hyatt Zilara was so over the top friendly and nice. Also just to let you guys know we didn’t plan any activities before we left. We didn’t want to overdo ourselves since we didn’t know how we would feel when we got there, I do think that that helped me feel comfortable and safe in the excursions.
The Trip
We got married on Saturday, October 21, 2023. We left the next day, Sunday, October 22, 2023, for our Trip. We drove down to Detroit to stay at a hotel since our flight was bright and early on Monday morning and we live 2 hours from the airport. Monday, October 22nd our flight through spirit (yes, spirit our wedding was expensive we must save money where we can haha.) We arrived in Cancun around 3PM (we also had a layover in Orlando, which I would not recommend I just wanted to be there.) The flights cost us about $890 after bags, seat selections, boarding, etc. Once we landed, we booked a vehicle prior from the airport to the resort. We booked this directly through the resort. It was $170 round trip and sat 10 people. Unfortunately for us we only had the two of us, so it was a little pricey but well worth it. Once we got into the van they had beer, water and pop for our convenience. They had free Wi-Fi on the van as well which made me feel safe since my phone wasn’t working the best. The drive over was about 45 minutes to an hour.
We arrived at Hyatt Zilara, and they met us at our door to take the luggage from us and give us water, champagne and warming towels. We went to the receptionist area where they got us into our room very prompt manner. We were offered to upgrade our room to the swim out sweet with beach view vs our original room of a king on the second floor with a balcony. The hotel cost us $4800 for 8 nights ($600 per night.) Now, at this resort there are 2 different areas, the “party” area and the “calm” area. My husband and I are not partiers in the slightest, so we were on the calmer side. This room was equipped with a full-time butler, a alcohol bar, some snacks, pop, a jacuzzi overlooking the beach and pool area, a huge shower, a living area and the bedroom area also overlooking the beach and pool area. The butler brought us refills on drinks and snacks when needed, answered any and all questions we had, texted us every time there was an event we would be interested in, make us dinner reservations, clean our room, and so much more. I don’t know about you guys whenever I hear about butlers, I always think I won’t have much privacy, so I get a little worried. This was not at all like that. They were so amazing and great! Hyatt Zilara has six all-inclusive restaurants, bars, lounges and a couple of specialty restaurants. They have Japanese food, Mexican food, a buffet that changes everyday on what is served, a coffee/ breakfast lounge (with the best ice cream), and a sports bar. My personal favorite was the buffet or the Mexican restaurant.
Monday after we got checked in and into our room we walked around the beaches, the pool area, grabbed ourselves a drink and laid around the rest of the day and ordered some room service. Another perk about this resort is 24-hour room service (it’s even free!)
Day 2: Tuesday we ordered room service (again, this happened a lot on this trip) for breakfast. I got some amazing waffles and Travis (my husband) got a breakfast taco. After breakfast we went to the beach and then the pool to just soak in some sun. While we were gone the butler decorated our room with flower pedals, a free bottle of champagne and a card that stated, “happy honeymoon.” After this we planned a excursion for the following day. We then got ready for dinner, had the buffet (they were serving American) and chilled for the rest of the night.
Day 3, Wednesday; Our Excursion for the day was Xcaret, Xplore. This is a excursion where you can go in underground caves that you go through in water and see bats, fish, and the cool caves around you. Now I am deathly afraid of fish, so I made Travis carry me most the time. The water in the caves get up to 8 feet deep (if I am remembering correctly). In some areas you had to swim through instead of walking. There were 2-3 different caves. It was a really cool experience. Other things we did while we were here (all included) was side by side riding, a small paddle boat (in the caves), ziplining and a full buffet (pretty good food). I would say that the drive to this location was very long and tiring. If you do want to go, make sure to wear/ bring a bathing suit and a change of clothes afterwards. If you are anything like me and don’t like things touching up on your feet bring water shoes. We didn’t get back until late that day, grabbed a quick bite to eat from the buffet and went to sleep.
Day 4, Thursday: Another beach/pool day!! We woke up, hung out at the pool and chilled. We got the buffet for lunch and for dinner we went to the Japanese restaurant.
Day 5, Friday: This day we woke up and went to the Mayans Ruans. This is a big land that people way back when lived on. It was super cool to see but it was much more for Travis than for me. He loves history. After we did this, we went to a local Mexican restaurant which was really cool. We were able to watch people make their food homemade. Along with this we went to a huge water hole. This is a big waterspout kind of with a big whole up top. You get to jump off the cliff to get into. It was cool. But again…. FISH…. At the end of this tour, we stopped in the heart of Cancun at the local small food places, we got some of the best churros ever there. They also had some amazing walking tacos.
Day 6, Saturday- Day 9 Tuesday: Were all beach days/chill days. We really didn’t want to do much except relax, eat good food, and enjoy our time.
Overall, I give this experience a 10/10. I loved Cancun and would go again. I do think we went to long and only need to go for 5-6 days not 8-9.
